Notes to Friedrich Heinrich Jacobi

1. Where possible, the entry will refer to both the English edition (The Main Philosophical Writings and the Novel Allwill, G. di Giovanni (ed. and trans.), Montréal & Kingston: McGill-Queen’s University Press, 1994; paperback edition, with new Preface, 2009; and the German critical edition. This will make it easier for everyone to navigate Jacobi’s texts.

2. To mention only a few among the most relevant contributions that would connect with Jacobi’s arguments: Hilary Putnam, Reason, Truth, and History, Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1981, esp. chapter 1: 1–21; Crispin Wright, ‘Facts and Certainty’, Proceedings of the British Academy, 71 (1985): 429–472; Barry McLaughlin, ‘Self-Knowledge, Externalism, and Skepticism’, in Proceedings of the Aristotelian Society (Supplementary Volume), 74 (2000): 93–117.
